Hi everyone! I’m excited to kick off my first blog post as a Sneakz intern by sharing a project that’s close to my heart — my Food Innovations competition entry.
Through a club called FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America), I was challenged to create a healthy snack that benefits the community and supports the values of Family Consumer Sciences. That’s how Im-Possible Chips were born — a homemade, better-for-you chip alternative for high school students who love snacking (especially on chips!).
The Challenge: A Better Chip
Let’s face it — chips are a go-to snack, especially for teens, but most of them are high in sodium, oil, and additives. My mission was to reimagine the chip: something flavorful, familiar, and most importantly, healthier.
The process started with defining my parameters:
-
✅ Organic ingredients where possible
-
❌ No added sugar
-
✅ Low oil, air-fried for less fat
-
✅ Purpose-driven: A snack that encourages better eating habits in schools
The Process: Research Meets Crunch
Over three months, I conducted a small-scale experiment:
-
Target Audience: High school students who regularly ate chips.
-
Test Groups: 30 → 60 → 90 students over three months.
-
Trials: I tweaked my recipe each round based on feedback, aiming for the perfect crunch and taste.
My final recipe? Thin-sliced potatoes soaked in pickle juice and air-fried after a 30-minute marinade. It gave the chips a tangy twist and a crispy texture — a huge hit with my testers!
Beyond the Recipe
Creating a product meant more than just cooking:
-
📊 I designed a Nutrition Facts label based on my ingredients.
-
🎨 I created chip bag packaging to reflect the personality of the snack.
-
💸 I calculated the cost to produce and scalability of the snack.
-
💬 I built a marketing pitch around encouraging better snacking in schools.
Presentation Time
With no screens allowed at the competition, I went old-school with a trifold poster board, styled to look like my chip bag! I also created a binder to document every step of my journey — from early concepts to final crunch. After months of research and testing when I competed I was given an 45/50 winning the state title for that year!
This experience showed me how much innovation, science, and creativity go into even the simplest snacks. And it’s exactly what drew me to Sneakz — a brand that believes in delicious, better-for-you food.
Stay tuned as I dive deeper into my internship this summer. I’ll be sharing behind-the-scenes moments, lessons learned, and more food innovation fun!
